Fill Me In

Fill Me In

Passage: Matthew 9:14-17

Speaker: Brad Owen

Series: The Stories In-Between: Parables

The only thing harder than learning new things is unlearning old things. Jesus was met almost always with resistance whenever He introduced what was new with His coming. Everyone who encounters Him at first resists--until they see how what He’s out to change is actually what they most need.

Readings & Scripture

Pre-Service Text: John 2:3-5
When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” 4 And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” 5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

Call To Worship: Psalm 96:1-4
LEADER: Oh sing to the LORD a new song;
sing to the LORD, all the earth!

PEOPLE: Sing to the LORD, bless his name;
tell of his salvation from day to day

LEADER: Declare his glory among the nations,
his marvelous works among all the peoples!

ALL: For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised;
he is to be feared above all gods.

Old Testament Reading: Isaiah 62:1-5
For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent,
and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not be quiet,
until her righteousness goes forth as brightness,
and her salvation as a burning torch.
2 The nations shall see your righteousness,
and all the kings your glory,
and you shall be called by a new name
that the mouth of the LORD will give.
3 You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the LORD,
and a royal diadem in the hand of your God.
4 You shall no more be termed Forsaken,
and your land shall no more be termed Desolate,
but you shall be called My Delight Is in Her,
and your land Married;
for the LORD delights in you,
and your land shall be married.
5 For as a young man marries a young woman,
so shall your sons marry you,
and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride,
so shall your God rejoice over you.

Central Text: Matthew 9:14-17
Then the disciples of John came to him, saying, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?” 15 And Jesus said to them, “Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast. 16 No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch tears away from the garment, and a worse tear is made. 17 Neither is new wine put into old wineskins. If it is, the skins burst and the wine is spilled and the skins are destroyed. But new wine is put into fresh wineskins, and so both are preserved.”

Benediction: I Thessalonians 5:23-24
LEADER: Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful;

ALL: he will surely do it.

Post-Service Text: Colossians 2:17
17 These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ.

Discussion Questions & Applications:

  1. Some say it’s hard to learn new things. What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever had to unlearn? Why was that? How did it happen--or is still happening?
  2. What are several ways you can think of that Jesus has challenged the conventional thinking of his day? What are the various ways his challenges have been met, and why?
  3. What are the hardest things people today have to unlearn if they will ever hear--much less, follow--Jesus? Why is that?
  4. Given what Christ does for us and gives to us, how is what He calls from us ultimately not a constraint--but a freedom?
