Gospel Community

Passage: Acts 2:41-47

Speaker: Brian Land

Series: Acts: The Perpetual Power of the Gospel

We have been brought out of isolation and into the community of all believers; the body; the bride. As a new family we are all called to be devoted to growing in the Gospel together; joining in other-focused sacrificial relationship together; spending quality and quantity time together; praying and focusing on God together. In doing these things we are actually engaging in a preview of what we will be doing together for eternity. And all of this has been made possible because the Father was other-focused and sacrificial by giving us the greatest resource of his Son Jesus to fill our greatest need of forgiveness and life.

Scripture Readings

Call To Worship: Hebrews 10:19-24 ESV
LEADER: 19 Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, 20 by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.

ALL:  23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works

Prayer: Faith  (adapted from The Valley of Vision)

LEADER: O Gracious and Redeeming God, grant us the eye of faith

ALL: To see You as Father. To know You as covenant God. To experience Your love through the work of Your Son.

LEADER: Be pleased to live and move within us. Breathing in our prayers. Inhabiting our praises. Moving in our actions.

ALL: Causing us to grow in Your grace

LEADER: Your bounteous goodness has helped us believe. Fan this divine spark into glowing flame. Awake faith in us to put forth its strength and actions.

ALL: Holy Spirit, fill our souls with the fullness of Christ.

Central Text: Acts 2:41-47 ESV
41 So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls. 42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. 43 And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. 44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common. 45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. 46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, 47 praising God and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.

Response: Romans 12:1-2;9-13 ESV
LEADER: 1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

ALL: 9 Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. 10 Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honour. 11 Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. 12 Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. 13 Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.

Benediction: Romans 15:5-6 ESV
LEADER: 5 May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus,

ALL:  6 that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Post-Service Text: Acts 2:45-47 ESV
45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. 46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, 47 praising God and having favour with all the people.

James 1:16
Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. 17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. 18 Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.

Discussion Questions
  1. What does “community” mean to you? Why do you want it? What would deep gospelccommunity look like to you?
  2. Read Acts 2:42 and unpack the four legs to the community table. Which one is most uncomfortable to you?
  3. What are the hindrances to gospel-community? What keeps you and others from getting involved in one or taking it to the deeper level of sacrificially serving?
  4. Is it harder: for you to give your resources to somebody else without strings, or to ask for help from others?
  5. If you are in a small group (community group, missional community), consider what Jeff Vanderstelt suggests for his community groups: make a list of resources (financial, physical, skills etc) as well as a list of needs, and see if there’s some overlap where the group as a whole could fill needs with resources.
    1. What would keep you from doing that? What fear arises?
  6. Instead of doing this “just because we should”, how is the gospel the great motivator to living in deep gospel community? What would you have to believe:
    1. About yourself (and your need)?
    2. About Jesus (and what he’s given you)?
    3. About the source of ALL your current gifts and resources?
