Readings & Scripture

Pre-Service Text: Exodus 19:4
You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself.

Call To Worship: Psalm 121:1-4
LEADER: I lift up my eyes to the hills.
From where does my help come?
PEOPLE: My help comes from the LORD,
who made heaven and earth.

LEADER: He will not let your foot be moved;
he who keeps you will not slumber.
ALL: Behold, he who keeps Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.

Affirmation of Faith: Heidelberg Catechism, Question 1
Question 1: What is your only comfort in life and death?

Answer: That I with body and soul, both in life and death, am not my own, but belong unto my faithful Saviour Jesus Christ; who, with his precious blood, has fully satisfied for all my sins, and delivered me from all the power of the devil; and so preserves me that without the will of my heavenly Father, not a hair can fall from my head; yea, that all things must be subservient to my salvation, and therefore, by his Holy Spirit, He also assures me of eternal life, and makes me sincerely willing and ready, henceforth, to live unto him.

Old Testament Reading: Isaiah 53:1-6
Who has believed what he has heard from us?
And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?
2 For he grew up before him like a young plant,
and like a root out of dry ground;
he had no form or majesty that we should look at him,
and no beauty that we should desire him.
3 He was despised and rejected by men,
a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief;
and as one from whom men hide their faces
he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

Is. 53:4 Surely he has borne our griefs
and carried our sorrows;
yet we esteemed him stricken,
smitten by God, and afflicted.
5 But he was pierced for our transgressions;
he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
and with his wounds we are healed.
6 All we like sheep have gone astray;
we have turned—every one—to his own way;
and the LORD has laid on him
the iniquity of us all.

Central Text: Romans 5:8
. . .but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Benediction: Numbers 6:24-26
LEADER: The LORD bless you and keep you;
the LORD make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you;
the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.

Post-Service Text: Psalm 121:7-8
The LORD will keep you from all evil;
he will keep your life.
8 The LORD will keep
your going out and your coming in

Discussion Questions & Applications:

  1. How can we show our love for others as individuals and as a church?
  2. What are the benefits of believing the completed work of Christ in the cross?
  3. How we should be compelled to show the love of Christ based on the incredible demonstration he did for us.
