Steadfast Purpose

Passage: Acts 11:19-30

Speaker: Brian Land

Series: Acts: The Perpetual Power of the Gospel

The Church’s (all followers of Jesus) ultimate purpose is to glorify God. This basically involves growing together, serving together and worshipping together. In this passage, we find the infant, diverse, connected church coming together in community to grow and worship. This fuels them to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit to serve in both word and deed: in word by sharing the gospel in their local community and beyond; in deed by sending physical help (such as famine relief) to the needy abroad. The Word in our lives and our church fuels us to grow by loving up (worship) and loving out (missions).

Scripture Readings

Call To Worship: Hebrews 12:1-2a; 28 ESV
LEADER: 1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith,

ALL: 28 Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe,

Prayer: Prayer of Confession (adapted from The Service for the Lord’s Day)

ALL: Merciful God,
We confess that we have sinned against You
in thought, word, and deed.

We have not loved you with
our whole heart, mind, and strength
And have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.

In your great mercy
forgive us,
renew us,
transform us
lead us,

That we may delight in your will
walk in your ways;
find joy in your Word.
Through Jesus Christ your Son.
Amen

Central Text: Acts 11:19-30; 13:1-3
19 Now those who were scattered because of the persecution that arose over Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia and Cyprus and Antioch, speaking the word to no one except Jews. 20 But there were some of them, men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who on coming to Antioch spoke to the Hellenists also, preaching the Lord Jesus. 21 And the hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number who believed turned to the Lord. 22 The report of this came to the ears of the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch. 23 When he came and saw the grace of God, he was glad, and he exhorted them all to remain faithful to the Lord with steadfast purpose, 24 for he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And a great many people were added to the Lord. 25 So Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul, 26 and when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. For a whole year they met with the church and taught a great many people. And in Antioch the disciples were first called Christians. 27 Now in these days prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch. 28 And one of them named Agabus stood up and foretold by the Spirit that there would be a great famine over all the world (this took place in the days of Claudius). 29 So the disciples determined, every one according to his ability, to send relief to the brothers living in Judea. 30 And they did so, sending it to the elders by the hand of Barnabas and Saul.

13:1 Now there were in the church at Antioch prophets and teachers, Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen a lifelong friend of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. 2 While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” 3 Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off.

Benediction: Philippians 1:6,11 ESV
6 And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.

11 filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

Post-Service Text: Acts 13:2-3 ESV
2 While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” 3 Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off.

Philippians 2:4 (Jesus’ ultimate purpose/aim)
4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant,[fn] being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Discussion Questions

  1. What are you trying to accomplish in life? What is your main goal, aim, pursuit?
  2. If a stranger were watching a video of your life, how would they answer that question about you?
  3. What is the main goal(s) of the church? Why do we exist?
  4. Barnabas saw God’s Grace active among this new diverse church and encouraged them to faithfully hold to their “steadfast purpose”. We can see three legs to this stool. Explain each of these three and why they are important not just for us individually but us as a community of believers:
    1. Gospel Growth
    2. Gospel Worship
    3. Gospel Service
  5. Gospel Service (“missions”) we see in this passage is done in two ways. Why are each of them important and how do you tend toward one over the other?
    1. Word - sharing the gospel (“evangelizing”)
    2. Deed - sending physical famine relief
  6. Consider Jesus and his life. What was his goal, aim, purpose? What did he accomplish? How does this give us motivation and fuel to do the same, not as guilt or burden, but as a natural response to the way we have been loved.

“The one concern of the devil is to keep the saints from praying. He fears nothing from prayer-less studies, prayer-less work, prayer-less religion. He laughs at our toil, mocks at our wisdom, but trembles when we pray.” ― Samuel Chadwick
