    Questioning Christianity - Week 4 - Identity

    Questioning Christianity - Week 4 - Identity

    Speaker: Patrick Lafferty

    Series: 2019 Questioning Christianity Q&A

    Category: Questioning Christianity

I teased [my voice] back by singing in empty theatres. I would sing, and crap out, and my knees would buckle and I would whimper in frustration. I didn’t know how I was going to carry on. Was I going to be some guy named Walter who doesn’t sing? Did I have to get a regular job instead? I’ve been singing since I was five. It’s my identity. - Art Garfunkel

    Reorienting us to the series:

    • As neither belief in God nor atheism can be proven, all positions rest on beliefs: premises which require some measure of faith-commitment
    • But even if there is no way to prove any position with certainty, positions can be compared and weighed according to experience, evidence, and within themselves (internal consistency)
    • No matter our position we all require a way of satisfaction, meaning, morality, justice, hope….and an identity that sustains us regardless of our performance

Problem: We all need a sense of self and worth.  Am I only as good as my latest achievement?
