Jesus from the Beginning to the End

Passage: Acts 8:26-40

Speaker: Brian Land

Series: Acts: The Perpetual Power of the Gospel

All of Scripture is the Gospel, pointing to our need of rescue and to Jesus the rescuer. It reveals the meta-narrative that we were made for something great, something beautiful; something (and someone, and by someone) perfect. But Creation has been and remains broken, leaving us in infinite need of someone to fix it. As just about every story we come across reveals, and what we constantly find in all of Scripture, there is a huge problem with a hero that will come (and has come) to save the day; to save us. In the end, he re-creates an unbreakable and eternal “happily ever after”. Every letter of Scripture reveals our greatest need and how Jesus on the cross transferred his great life for our great death. As we see and believe this ultimate eternal truth, we are first called to BE transformed and then to LIVE transformed by following the Holy Spirit’s leading, even if we don’t exactly know why or how.

Scripture Readings

Call To Worship: Isaiah 61:1,10a ESV
LEADER: 1 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor, he has sent me to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;

ALL: I will greatly rejoice in the Lord; my soul shall exult in my God, for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation; he has covered me with the robe of righteousness,

Prayer: Regeneration

LEADER: O God of the Highest Heaven, occupy the throne of our hearts, lay low every rebel lust, manifest Your great power and make us Yours forever.

ALL: You have loved us, espoused us, received us, and adorned us.

LEADER: We were dead in iniquities but Your Spirit has quickened us;

ALL: Opening us to Your Word as light, guide, solace, and joy.

LEADER: Help us to walk in Your great mercy and love. Keep us for we cannot keep ourselves. Let us lay aside all that steals, kills and destroys. Your abundant life brings unending joy.

ALL: Make us salt of the earth.  Light on a hill. A blessing to all.

Central Text: Acts 8:26-41
26 Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Rise and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” This is a desert place. 27 And he rose and went. And there was an Ethiopian, a eunuch, a court official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was in charge of all her treasure. He had come to Jerusalem to worship 28 and was returning, seated in his chariot, and he was reading the prophet Isaiah. 29 And the Spirit said to Philip, “Go over and join this chariot.” 30 So Philip ran to him and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?” 31 And he said, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. 32 Now the passage of the Scripture that he was reading was this: “Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter and like a lamb before its shearer is silent, so he opens not his mouth. 33 In his humiliation justice was denied him. Who can describe his generation? For his life is taken away from the earth.” 34 And the eunuch said to Philip, “About whom, I ask you, does the prophet say this, about himself or about someone else?” 35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning with this Scripture he told him the good news about Jesus. 36 And as they were going along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, “See, here is water! What prevents me from being baptized?” 38 And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him. 39 And when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord carried Philip away, and the eunuch saw him no more, and went on his way rejoicing. 40 But Philip found himself at Azotus, and as he passed through he preached the gospel to all the towns until he came to Caesarea.

Benediction: Romans 10:14-15 ESV
LEADER: 14 How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written,

ALL: “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”

Post-Service Text: Acts 8:35 ESV
35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning with this Scripture he told him the good news about Jesus.

Related Scriptures:

Luke 4:16-22a
And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. 17 And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written, 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” 20 And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21 And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” 22 And all spoke well of him and marveled at the gracious words that were coming from his mouth.

1 Peter 3
14b Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, 15 but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, 16 having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame.

2 Peter 1:21
For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

Rom 19:14 How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”

Discussion Questions

  1. Philip heard and followed the Holy Spirit’s specific direction. How do you suppose he heard Him so clearly? How do you hear the Spirit’s prodding?
  2. When you sense God calling you somewhere, what debate runs through your head?
  3. Philip quickly responded to the Where and To Whom without even knowing WHY or HOW. Do you sometimes feel incapacitated because you don’t feel equipped to go and serve? Or even why you should?
  4. Philip’s sermon began with the Old Testament and showed how it all was the gospel and all pointed to Jesus. How do you see Jesus even in the Old Testament?
  5. There is a great gospel lens to read all of scripture through: How is our massive NEED revealed; How is God’s gracious CURE revealed. Where is that in the following places:
    1. David and Goliath (1 Sam 17)
    2. Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego (and the “fourth man”) in the furnace. (Daniel 3)
    3. Ruth’s Kinsman Redeemer (Ruth 1-4)
    4. Gomer and Hosea (Hosea 1)
    5. What other stories? (Noah; Manna from Heaven; Red Sea)
  6. How does this gospel lens change how you see all of Scripture and God’s redemptive plan throughout history? How does it change how you see Jesus?

Quotes

“I’d say you haven’t discipled someone if they only have been equipped to evangelize and bring people to church.  If they are truly discipled, they must be motivated and equipped to love their neighbors, to do justice and mercy.  And they also must be equipped to integrate their faith with their work, namely, to engage culture.” – Timothy J. Keller

"In the gospel, you don't have one more story that points to an underlying reality. It IS the underlying reality to which all stories point." - J.R.R. Tolkein
