Worthy of Any Office

CENTRAL TEXT: Mark 10:35-45; Hebrews 9:26b-28

And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came up to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” 36 And he said to them, “What do you want me to do for you?” 37 And they said to him, “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” 38 Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” 39 And they said to him, “We are able.” And Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized, 40 but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.” 41 And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant at James and John. 42 And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 43 But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

. . . But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. 27 And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, 28 so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.

PRAYER/SCRIPTURE READING/CONFESSION OF FAITH: 1 Peter 5:1-7

LEADER: So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: 2 shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; 3 not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. 4 And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. 5 Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, 7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

ALL: Thanks be to God

CELEBRATION OF THE LORD’S SUPPER

CONFESSION OF SIN:

LEADER: Let us confess our sin to Almighty God.

ALL: We all crave esteem, until we learn Yours matters most. We all seek acceptance, until we learn Yours comes by grace alone. Forgive us for settling for less, for seeking where it can’t be found, for turning from the glorious offer of Yours to reach for what has no substance. Help us to see the glory in your service–by first seeing the glory again in Your Son.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON: Mark 10:45; Hebrews 9:26-28

LEADER: For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. . . .as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. 27 And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, 28 so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.

ALL: Thanks be to God

BENEDICTION: Numbers 6:24-26

LEADER: May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you. May the Lord lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace.

DISMISSAL: Amen.

LEADER: Let us go forth to serve the world as those who love our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

ALL: Thanks be to God!

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:

  1. What leader has most impressed you and why? What leader most disappointed you and why?
  2. What do James and John want (or their mother wanted in Luke’s account of the same moment)? Why might they want that?
  3. Why doesn’t Jesus denounce that desire?
  4. What is the way to what they want?
  5. What was Jesus’s path to glory and greatness (cf. Philippians 2:5-11)? What did that path accomplish for anyone with faith in Him?
