Romans 7:15-25

Romans 7:15-25

Passage: Romans 7:15-25

Speaker: Brad Owen

Series: That’s the Spirit: Learning to keep in step with Him who indwells

Readings & Scripture

PREPARATION: 2 Corinthians 47-12;16
LEADER: 7 But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. 8 We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; 9 persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; 10 always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. 11 For we who live are always being given over to death for Jesus' sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. 12 So death is at work in us, but life in you.
ALL: 16 So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day.

Old Testament Reading: Psalm 19:7-14
LEADER: 7 The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure,
making wise the simple; 8 the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the
commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes; 9 the fear of the Lord is clean,
enduring forever; the rules of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether. 10 More to be desired
are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the
honeycomb. 11 Moreover, by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great
reward. 12 Who can discern his errors? Declare me innocent from hidden faults. 13 Keep back
your servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me! Then I shall be
blameless, and innocent of great transgression. 14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation
of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.

CENTRAL TEXT: Romans 7:15-25
15 For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. 16 Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is good. 17 So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. 18 For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. 20 Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. 21 So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. 22 For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, 23 but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. 24 Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? 25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.

BENEDICTION: 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24
LEADER: 23 Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

ALL: 24 He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.
